This was a highly anticipated game for the 360, mostly because of its promised co-op that the game was entirely meant for. You can play single player, but the computer sucks at it, and it's much more fun playing with another person. My friend and I had a blast navigating and aggroing around the different levels.
First: AI. AI in this game is pretty terrible, both for your computer co-op player and many of the enemies. Your co-op computer is obviously the stupidest of all of them, not cooperating when you need it to and getting caught up in places, making the co-op take twice as long as an already-short game. Just play with a friend. Past that, the enemies aren't too bright either, and the shielded ones are a bitch that are obviously used to force the co-op aggro concept, but not as well executed as could have been.
Campaign Mode. The campaign introduces a fair story, but not the greatest story that could have been implemented with something as rich as mercenaries that can go anywhere and do anything. Would it have been too much to ask to have players choose their own hits and missions? Have a detailed mission branch? Choose higher difficulty assassinations for more money, or choose the lower if you just want to kill for fun. Even without that, the weapon buying/upgrading was a good idea. In fact, it was a great idea. I give them kudos for this RPG system injected into an FPS. It would have been great to have even more weapon customization, and to have a more detailed branch in that respect. I've heard that if you beat the game you can unlock all the assault rifles or some such, and I think that ruins the incentive. Beside all this, the campaign is pretty short and not highly detailed or well written. And worst of all: the stupid 3 second cutscenes when opening doors and pressing buttons. Why ruin the fluidity of the gameplay?
Multiplayer. I can't say a whole lot about this, as I played very little. From what I played, I can say that it is chaotic, a bit hard to figure out, and not really that great. There are odd missions that you have to compete for, enemies running left and right, bullets flying, and me going "wtf is that objective marker and how the fuck do I get there?" I just wasn't a fan.
The best part about this game, the one thing that other games and future games should introduce is called Aggro. Take the aggro RPG concept and through it into an FPS, and you have a dynamite mechanic. It means that if I attack an enemy, the enemy is going to turn their attention towards me and largely ignore my teammate. I love this co-op concept, and hope to see it repeated more in the future. The aggro of your character can be augmented by your weapon, basically by making it more dangerous/intimidating.
All in all, this was a game with great promise that failed to deliver. I warn people not to take this game with the same seriousness and enthusiasm of other top FPS franchises, but be on the lookout for a sequel or the continuation of core mechanics. It laid the foundation for some great FPS gameplay in the future, and I look forward to that.
